Contemporary Living Room Refresh
Residential Interior Design | Rental Property | Furniture & Styling
The Brief
The aim of this project was to refresh the living room of a contemporary new-build rental property, creating a warm, inviting and cohesive space whilst working within the limitations of rented accommodation.
Having already made several decorative changes since moving in, the client wanted to further develop the space, blending their existing furniture with the contemporary style of the property.
As a rental, permanent alterations to the existing finishes, including the flooring and fitted cabinetry, were not an option. The challenge was therefore to create a design that complemented these features whilst introducing warmth, character and personality through carefully considered furniture choices, colour and accessories.
The Design Approach
One of the main challenges was working with the existing cool blue-grey flooring and darker wood finishes, whilst incorporating furniture pieces the client wished to retain.
Rather than allowing these contrasting elements to compete, the design focused on creating a colour palette that would bring them together.
Rich navy blues were introduced to complement the existing armchair and cooler tones within the flooring, whilst warm mustard yellows, soft neutrals and gold accents helped balance the scheme and introduce warmth.
Additional furniture pieces were carefully selected to bridge the gap between the existing furnishings and the contemporary architecture. Clean lines and lighter finishes help maintain a fresh, modern aesthetic, whilst natural textures, warmer tones and decorative accessories soften the overall look.
The Concept
The proposed design embraces a warm contemporary aesthetic, combining rich colours, layered textures and a balance of modern and traditional furniture styles.
By working with the property's existing features rather than against them, the design demonstrates how thoughtful furniture selection and styling can transform the feel of a space without the need for structural alterations or permanent changes.
The result is a cohesive and welcoming concept that brings together the client's existing furniture and the contemporary character of the home, creating a space that feels both personal and considered.
